About FET

What is Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)?

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) is a fertility procedure where previously frozen embryos are thawed and transferred into the uterus for pregnancy.

During IVF treatment, healthy embryos may be frozen and stored using cryopreservation technology for future pregnancy attempts.

If the first IVF cycle is unsuccessful or additional embryos are available, these frozen embryos can later be used without restarting the complete IVF process.

Why FET?

When Frozen Embryo Transfer is Recommended

Failed IVF Cycle

Frozen embryos may be used if the previous IVF cycle did not result in pregnancy.

Risk of OHSS

Embryos may be frozen to reduce complications related to ovarian hyperstimulation.

Blastocyst Development

FET may help select healthy embryos after blastocyst culture development.

Genetic Testing

Embryos may be frozen before PGD or PGS genetic testing procedures.

Lower IVF Cost

FET may reduce the overall cost compared to restarting a fresh IVF cycle.

Hormonal Imbalance

FET may be useful when hormone levels are not ideal for fresh embryo transfer.

Procedure

Frozen Embryo Transfer Procedure

During the FET cycle, previously frozen embryos are thawed carefully and transferred into the uterus at the appropriate time.

  • Embryos are stored in liquid nitrogen below -196°C
  • Embryos are thawed before transfer
  • Endometrium is prepared for implantation
  • Embryo transfer is done using a thin catheter
  • No fresh egg retrieval is required
  • No fertilization process needs to be repeated

Benefits

Benefits of Frozen Embryo Transfer

01

Less Medication

FET cycles may require fewer ovarian stimulation medicines compared to fresh IVF cycles.

02

Reduced Stress

Patients avoid repeat egg retrieval and fertilization procedures during FET.

03

Lower Cost

FET may be more affordable because embryos are already available from IVF.

04

High Success Support

Healthy frozen embryos may provide good implantation and pregnancy outcomes.

PGD / PGS

Frozen Embryo Transfer with PGD/PGS

FET may be combined with Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) or Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS) to help evaluate embryos.

Advanced screening techniques may help identify healthier embryos before implantation and support better pregnancy planning.

  • Embryo genetic evaluation support
  • Selection of healthier embryos
  • Reduced risk of abnormal embryo transfer
  • Better implantation planning

FET Success Factors

  • Age of woman
  • Embryo quality
  • Endometrial preparation
  • Embryo thaw survival
  • IVF history
  • Hormonal balance
Success Rate

Success Rate of Frozen Embryo Transfer

Comparable to IVF

FET success rates are often comparable to fresh IVF cycles in many patients.

Age Dependent

Younger women generally have better embryo quality and improved success rates.

Healthy Embryo Selection

Blastocyst culture and PGD/PGS may improve embryo selection support.

Improved Implantation Support

Proper uterine preparation may help improve implantation conditions.

FAQ

Frozen Embryo Transfer FAQ’s

After transfer, the embryo tries to attach itself to the uterine lining. Pregnancy testing is generally scheduled after around two weeks.

In selected cases, FET may provide better implantation conditions and reduce stress related to ovarian stimulation.

The exact duration depends on the treatment plan, hormonal preparation and embryo transfer schedule advised by the fertility specialist.
